Capitalism Inspired Addictions (Or “Addictions part 2”)

Capitalism Inspired Addictions (Or “Addictions part 2”) 28.February.2004

(I know there was some stuff I forgot in my previous post)

I have now become a Pepsi drinker. Ew, many of you might say, while I know about two people welcoming me to the family. This is coming from someone who would occasionally change his beverage at a restaurant when I ordered a Coke only to be returned with an “is Pepsi ok”. No its not ok, “I’ll have sweet tea”. But I have starting to seek out Pepsi, look for it at stores and buy it with a bit of excitement on my face. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like Pepsi that much, Coke is so much better. But I have to have it, I have to have my 20oz. bottle. Thanks to a unique moment of marketing genius. I’ve seen there ads for years and what never convinced, until one day. One day when I saw a commercial with some teenagers who had “Fought the law” and lost. It wasn’t the commercial or that I have some weird thing that I can’t resist products endorsed by no name teenagers. It was the fact that Pepsi was providing a 1 in 3 chance of winning a free song. Yes I have a 1 in 3 chance of winning a digital download of any of 500,000 song. I am willing to spend $1.19 to by a 20oz for the mere CHANCE of winning a prize valued at $0.99. Its not that I was at the store about to by a Coke and was like “oh look a free song, I’ll get a Pepsi instead”. I have walked around a store for 5 minutes dying to find there Pepsi collection. All I have to say is thank goodness for The Tilt. $1.19 is much more easy to spend when its not a 1 in 3 chance of winning, but when it is certainty that you will win. The first week of the promotion my roommate Kyle noticed you can look under the cap without even opening the bottle, it took the internet a couple weeks to pick up on this fact, but now has become a serious issue for this whole marketing campaign. Serves them right! That’s what they deserve for getting me to buy Pepsi. But I can’t help myself, m u s t b u y p e p s i.

GO PEPSI and ITUNES! I can stop anytime I want, as long as its after April 30, 2004.
